The people who founded and presently make up The Naturist Society (TNS) have chosen to describe themselves as "naturists" instead of "nudists" for a variety of reasons. Europeans who practice social nudity have historically referred to this set of beliefs and practices as "naturism," and the word connotes a connectedness with nature TNS seeks to foster. In line with TNS' definition is that of the International Naturist Federation: "Naturism is a way of life in harmony with nature characterized by the practice of communal nudity, with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others, and for the environment."
There are many millions of naturists worldwide, especially in Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. According to a 2006 Roper Poll, one in four Americans—roughly 70 million people—have skinny-dipped or sunbathed in the nude. And while not all of them are naturists, the rapid growth the nude recreation industry has experienced in recent years suggests many are.

Single people, families, and retirees; teachers, construction workers, clerks and computer programmers; globe-trotters and homebodies... it doesn’t matter.
